Dr Liberty Vittert is an incredibly bright mathematician and statistician specialising in facial shape analysis. She has a PhD in mathematics and statistics and is keen to bring her enthusiasm for maths to a wider audience.
As an approachable, intelligent young woman in the male dominated STEM world, Liberty is often asked to share her knowledge within the media and has appeared on STV Scottish news, BBC Radio Scotland, Channel 4, Fox News Channel, and PBS. In 2017, Liberty was one of twenty women chosen from hundreds of applicants to become a BBC Woman Expert Contributor for BBC Television and Radio Programmes. She is also an Ambassador for the Royal Statistical Society. Her work also includes issues of involving and energising young people in STEM subjects.
Liberty Vittert is currently the Mitchell Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of Glasgow in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and a visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York City. She has significant experience in explaining issues concerning mathematics, statistics, polling and voting techniques, and the topic of 'big data' to the media, public, and government.
After completing her PhD at the University of Glasgow, Liberty was offered the role of Mitchell Lecturer at the University. As well as teaching, Liberty’s interests lie in relating statistics to real-life situations.
Liberty graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2010, with a degree in mathematics and a concentration in political science with Russian language from Harvard. Liberty is a Board Member of USA for the UN Refugee Agency with the aim to use data for good. Through this ambassadorial role, she gives invited talks at conferences around the world. Liberty is also a regular guest speaker at corporate events and has presented a Tedx Talk in Scotland.
Between finishing her undergraduate degree and undertaking postgraduate research, Liberty took a year away from her studies and moved to Paris to follow her love of cooking by enrolling in Le Cordon Bleu cookery school. She has made regular appearances as a guest chef on STV’s Live at Five and had her own cookery show on local STV channels called ‘Liberty’s Great American Cookbook'.
